The simple truth about Brandon Brazier is cowboys trust him with their lives.
That’s why he’s been voted to work 13 finals, from regional rodeo circuits to the Bullriders of America to the National Federation of Professional Bull Riders.
But what people might not know is how Brazier got his start.
“I was at a practice pen, and I went out and fought and just fell in love with it,” Brazier said. “I went to a school, and it all just took off.”
Now he’s been battling bovines for a decade, putting his body on the line to try to help bull riders go unscathed. And he’s a rather handy bullfighter, not only working the protection in but also being crowned the champion of the Midwest Bullfighters Freestyle Bullfights in 2005.
“I don’t love freestyle, but I’ll do it,” Brazier said. “Protection is where I’ve concentrated my whole career.”
And now with the growth of protection competition, the Missouri cowboy is finding quite a comfort zone.
“I like knowing that those guys can get on the backs of bulls and know that if they’re in a bad spot, I’m going to get them out,” he said. “With the competition, you’re on the edge and on the muscle. You’ve got to go as hard as you can get.
“You take the situation, read the situation and use it for all its worth.”
And he’s seen plenty of advantages to being part of the contests.
“It’s made a tremendous difference in the last few years,” Brazier said. “Some of the saves I didn’t use to make, I make now.”
