Cory WallAt the ripe ol’ age of 20, Cory Wall decided it was time to make a career change.

“I rode bulls for a number of years, and I decided I wanted to fight bulls,” said Wall, an alternate bullfighter at the 2007 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “So I went to a Sankey Rodeo School and have been doing it since.”

That was 1989. Now he’s an elder statesman among bullfighters, but don’t call him old. One look at Wall in the arena, and you’d never guess he’s 40 years old. He moves around like a teenager, putting himself in position to do his job. And he’s better than most.

Since he became a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1997, he’s been selected to work some of the biggest events in the organization. In 2008, he not only qualified to fight bulls at the Professional Bullfighters Daisy Protection Bullfight World Championships, but he’s also been selected to protect bull riders during the ProRodeo Tour Playoffs in Omaha, Neb., and Dallas. It marked the second straight year he worked in Omaha and the fourth straight time to be in Dallas.

“I don’t consider myself over the hill by any means,” Wall said. “Physically I feel good, and hopefully that’ll be the way it is when we get to the finals.”

Wall sees something special in being one of the older guys involved in the PBF. There’s been a youth movement, which presents plenty of opportunities for everyone involved.

“It’s a different excitement,” he said. “There’s a lot of youth, and the kids that are in this bring a lot of energy. They’re out there having a lot of fun, and they spring around and bounce around a whole lot more.

“The PBF gives guys more opportunities. It actually markets them and their skills.”

In his career, he’s also been honored to work the Dodge Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo three times and the Dodge National Circuit Finals in 2007.

“I know there are those younger guys that are looking at me, because I had guys I looked up to,” Wall said. “This is an opportunity to show them how to fight bulls the right way.”
