ODESSA, Texas – At least some other team is atop the leaderboard at the Professional Bullfighters Daisy Protection Bullfight World Finals.
Dave Jantzi of Sugar Creek, Ohio, and Toby Inman of Davis Junction, Ill. – representing Team All-American Dodge – won the opening two go-rounds of the championship, but settled for second place Wednesday night behind Jay Brewer of Graham, Texas, and Steve Wangler of Plainview, Neb., whose 78 was one point better.
“This one goes out to my partner,” said Brewer, who, with Wangler, represents Team Mann Creek Buck-N-Bulls. “With my injury, I do as much as I possibly can, but I have to rely on Steve to do most of the work. I just don’t have the ability to fight bulls the way I’d like.”
Brewer is suffering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He suffered the injury a month ago, but it buckled again in the first round.
“This is the toughest competition we’ll face, so it means a lot to have a night like tonight,” Wangler said.
Wednesday marked the halfway point of the World Championships. The teams are embroiled in a close competition, with Jantzi and Inman in the lead through three rounds. They have scored 246 points through the first half of the contest, while Team Cavenders’ sportsmen Andy Burelle of Ardmore, Okla., and Dusty Tuckness of Meeteetse,Wyo., are second with 221.

ODESSA, Texas – It was twice the fun for a regional cowboy on Wednesday night at the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo at the Ector County Coliseum.
LeMond, a first-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier in 2008, returned home to compete in the third performance of the Odessa based rodeo. The Andrews cowboy competed in tie-down roping and team roping Wednesday night and is also scheduled for the steer-roping competition that’s scheduled for Friday.
“I just started tie-down roping,” LeMond said. “I do all three events here because this is my hometown rodeo.”
Don’t look for LeMond to be anything but humble about his talents, either. In fact, there’s nothing special about his trip to Las Vegas for the Wrangler NFR.
“It’s just a job,” LeMond said. “It’s what I do to make money, and you try to make it to the NFR because that’s where you can make the most money.”
During his stay in the Nevada desert, LeMond pocketed more than $30,000, roping with Martin Lucero of Stephenville, Texas. He finished seventh among headers, collecting more than $123,000 in 2008.
LeMond was unsuccessful scoring a time in his inaugural tie-down roping run for 2009. In team roping, he and his new partner, Randon Adams of Logandale, Nev., had a 20.2-second run – a 5.2-second run with two penalties.. Adams, who roped with Matt Sherwood last season, won the heeling world championship.
“I think I’ve got a legitimate shot at winning the world title,” LeMond said. “I’ve got the world champion heeler heeling for me, so that gives me an advantage right off the bat.”
