ODESSA, Texas – Dave Jantzi and Toby Inman are riding a hot streak.
The Professional Bullfighters Daisy Protection Bullfight World Championships are a great place to get on a roll, and on Saturday night during the second performance that takes place in conjunction with the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo, the duo representing Team All-American Dodge pulled through with their second straight win.
Jantzi, of Sugar Creek, Ohio, and Inman, of Davis Junction, Ill., reeled off 79 points on four bulls, edging Team Cavenders, represented by Andy Burelle of Ardmore, Okla., and Dusty Tuckness of Meeteetse, Wyo., who had a 76. Team Daisy, represented by Joe Garretson of Springfield, Mo., and Cory Wall of Burlington, Colo., finished third with a 73.
“It was a good, tight match, which is what we expect at our World Championships,” said Jim McLain, president of the PBF.
The PBF protection-bullfight competition is based on developing a contest among some of the greatest athletes in ProRodeo – the guys that for years have been hired hands to protect fallen bull riders. This provides a competitive edge to these talented athletes.
Team All-American Dodge also took a big step in the overall lead with 167 points in two rounds. Second place is Team Cavenders with 143, followed by Team Daisy, 139; Team Mann Creek Buck-N-Bulls, Jay Brewer of Graham, Texas and Steve Wangler of Plainview, Neb., 134; and Team Buster’s Well Service, Wacey Munsell of Ulysses, Kan., and Lance McIlvain of Arlington, Texas.
But there are four rounds to go, and the third round will take place Wednesday, Jan. 7.

ODESSA, Texas – It was good and bad for a couple of Odessa College rodeo team alumni.
Bareback rider Ryan Gray of Cheney, Wash., had the best score of the night, matching moves with the Harry Vold Rodeo Co. bronc Dust Devil for 84 points.
But Ty Elliott of Vernon, British Columbia, wasn’t able to stay on Fu Boo for more than two seconds, watching his entry-fee money and his travel expenses go away as he hit the turf during Saturday’s second performance of the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo at the Ector County Coliseum.
Gray, who earned his associates degree in business management before transferring to Texas Tech, is a four-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. He hopes to use his earnings in his old stomping grounds to propel him to his fifth trip to ProRodeo’s grand finale, which takes place every December in Las Vegas.
But the rodeo road winds considerably between now and then, and he has to compete against rank bucking horses and talented hands, like traveling partner Bobby Mote of Culver, Wash., a two-time bareback-riding champ.
the business to more than $88,000, a pretty good run at the 10-round championship. Mote, who won world titles in 2002 and 2007, spurred the Vold horse Bear Sign for 79 points.
The rodeo will take a few days off before performances begin again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7.
